National Laboratory of the Rockies Features EnKoat: Putting Sunscreen on Roofs and the Results Speak for Themselves
What happens when you apply sunscreen to a roof? At a 110,000 sq ft Texas data center, the answer was a 50°F drop in interior temperatures, zero heat-related equipment failures, and 100% uptime. The National Laboratory of the Rockies took notice and featured EnKoat's story as a standout example of what thermal innovation looks like when it moves from the lab to the field.
Now, with a 60,000 sq ft large-scale field study underway in New Jersey, the next chapter of that story is being written.
The Texas Data Center: Proof at Scale
Data centers are among the most thermally demanding facilities in the built environment. Cooling systems run continuously, equipment operates at high temperatures, and any failure in the thermal envelope can cascade into costly sometimes catastrophic downtime. For the 110,000 sq ft Texas facility, roof surface heat was a persistent and expensive problem.
EnKoat's IntelliKoat™ system was applied to the roof and the results were immediate and measurable. Interior temperatures dropped by more than 50°F. Cooling systems operated under significantly reduced strain. Heat-related equipment failures dropped to zero. Uptime held at 100%.
It was the kind of real-world validation that moves a technology from promising to proven.
The New Jersey Field Study: Scaling the Evidence
Building on the Texas results, EnKoat brought IntelliKoat™ to a 60,000 sq ft warehouse in New Jersey this time as part of a formal, large-scale field study designed to generate independently validated performance data at scale.
The study is being conducted in partnership with two respected institutions in the climate innovation ecosystem:
- Wells Fargo Innovation Incubator (IN2) a leading accelerator backing clean energy and building efficiency technologies with real-world deployment support
- Galvanize Real Estate a climate-focused real estate partner committed to advancing sustainable building performance
Data validation is being led by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) lending scientific rigor and independent credibility to the results EnKoat has been generating in the field.
This isn't just a coating application. It is a structured, independently validated study designed to produce the kind of evidence that moves markets, informs policy, and accelerates adoption across the built environment.
More Than a Coating
IntelliKoat™ is a system dual-layer, engineered, and deployed with precision. It delivers thermal control, weather protection, and energy savings in a single application that works with the existing roof rather than replacing it. For building owners and facility managers, that means:
- Measurable reductions in cooling energy demand
- Extended roof life without full tear-off and replacement
- Independently validated performance data to support investment decisions
- A scalable solution deployable across roof types, climates, and building categories
The National Laboratory of the Rockies feature captures what EnKoat has been building toward a body of real-world evidence, validated by credible partners, that proves the system performs where it counts most.
